It’s not you and the last Fall 5

2 Dec

First, I’d like to say that I know my posts have been crazy inconsistent and I apologize for that. Despite how much I enjoy blogging, it comes in dead last on the priorities list when life is full and busy. A major change in my work schedule has been a blessing, but a blessing that cuts down on free time for blogging. I choose to spend that free time being with people I love and enjoying life (read: actually running) and I’m not sorry for it. I like you guys, I really do, but it’s just…

Starting after the holidays, I will again have another change in my work schedule. This one will free up my evenings and potentially make it easier to blog more regularly. So, if you’re hoping to hear about more of my running and life adventures, stick around!

On that note, I think I have to talk about how I’ve been struggling with my motivation for running since coming back from Italy at the end of October. Running the Stockadeathon did give me a nice (yet brief) boost in that department, but since then it’s been a bit…stale.

I’ve been making excuses not to run and sometimes I haven’t even felt that into it during runs. Maybe I’ve been avoiding putting these facts to paper (er, blog?) for fear that it will make them real and then I’ll have to do something about it.

One big example is that I had planned to run 10 miles on Sunday for the last installment of the Fall 5 or 10 Virtual Race Series, but just couldn’t get myself going. Instead of skipping it, I decided to drop it down to 5 miles – mostly because I knew I would only regret completely blowing it off.

Somewhere in the first couple of miles, the motivation spiked just enough for me to get through it at a decent pace and finish without regrets. And in 41:50, my last run of the Fall 5 or 10 series was over! I am really glad I had that bit of accountability to at least get me up and moving.

Another confession: I am really, really craving a fantastic long run. You know the type – giddy with anticipation, smiling the whole way, letting your heart decide the pace. I know that will come. I also know there are some things I have to do for myself to get there.

Some ideas I have to bust these blues:

  1. Sign up for a group run with my local running club
  2. Try a new cross training exercise
  3. Sign up for a winter race
  4. Get new winter running gear
  5. Seek advice and support from other runners
  6. Participate in something fun like the #RunChatHunt
  7. Just keep running

Question for you: How do you deal with the running blues?
