June came so soon! (A Stridebox Review)

14 Jun

I woke up to a beautiful sight this morning – the sun was back out and ready to play! After running a couple of errands, I set myself up on the front porch for some blogging, reading, snacking, hydrating, and icing (for tomorrow’s 5K).

image_1It seems like it wasn’t very long ago that I got around to reviewing the May Stridebox and here I am with the June box ready and waiting for me to enjoy it. Let’s open it up!

As I started pulling the items out, I was immediately excited about the Foot Rubz Massage Ball. Mark and I had just had a conversation about how he should use a foot roller to help with his new running pains. Now we don’t have to go find one! According to the package, there are over 160 stimulating fingers on the ball that help massage sore feet, hands, or any where. I gave it a try and it feels gooood!

This month’s fuel and hydration picks:

  1. PocketFuel Crunchy Banana Blueberry Almond Butter with kick. Vegan, gluten free, 100% natural whole food fuel with 8g of protein. I’ve never had a crunchy squeeze fuel before, so I’m curious about how that added texture will affect the fueling experience. You can read all about the company philosophy here.
  2. Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix in Lemons/Limes flavor. This is known as “Secret Drink Mix” because athletes claim it has performed better than the leading brands and doesn’t cause bloating or stomach discomfort. I’m looking forward to trying it out, but I’m pretty skeptical that it’s going to be better than my favorite nuun.
  3. Electro Delytes Energy and Electrolyte Citrus Bar. This bar has electrolytes, simple carbs, all natural ingredients, no caffeine and only 55 calories!
  4. PowerICE Lime Kicker Electrolyte Ice Bar. Who doesn’t enjoy a nice freeze pop on a hot summer day? Well, now you can replenish electrolytes after a hot and sweaty summer workout in the same fun way you did as a kid (but better for you). Gluten free, Kosher, no high-fructose corn syrup, 30 calories…and it’s frozen! I’m popping this in the freezer for another one of those 90 degree days!

I’m not one to usually change the laces on my shoes, but I might consider it now that I’ve got a set of Lock Laces. This is a cool elastic shoelace fastening system that keeps your laces tight and secure without the need for double knots. The company also lists improved circulation and prevention of heel crushing as product benefits. They come in a variety of colors and you can use them for any athletic shoe and for multiple activities. I might put these on my Saucony Mirage II’s, since the laces don’t stay tight and the tongue likes to move around.

Remember that time I ended up with some serious chafing after a 10 mile run? This anti-chafe cream with tea tree oil from Blue Steel Sports sure would have come in handy to prevent that painful mess! It can be used to prevent chafing OR to help soothe and calm irritated skin after activity. The tea tree oil (which I love!) adds a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent. image_4When I first opened this month’s box, I was a little less-than excited about all the lemon-limey products because it’s not usually my favorite flavor. Now that I’ve had the chance to really look closely at each of those products, I’m looking forward to testing them out even if my taste buds aren’t so jazzed. As usual, the $15 monthly subscription proves to be a worthy investment, as the retail value of June’s contents is over $26!

And finally, keeping in line with the efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle, here’s how I re-purposed May’s box:

Running free on Friday

3 May

If you’re like me, you have a theme song for pretty much everything. Today, I give you my theme for Fridays. This starts to play in my head Thursday night because I currently do not work on Fridays. It is my day to do what I want!

I started the day with a gorgeous naked run. That’s right, friends. I ran without any tracking device! No Garmin, no iPhone app, not even music. It was just me and my shoes hitting the pavement with the sun shining and the birds chirping.

Beautiful. 🙂

If I recall correctly from other times I’ve run this route, it was just under 4 miles. It felt freeing to be disconnected from gadgets and just run.

I ran a bunch of errands today (you know, the usual – Target, Trader Joe’s, Fleet Feet) and was very happy to discover more running mail! I did a little dance.

My order came in from Under Armour and I got a new issue of Runner’s World! I added these to my other packages that arrived this week from Running Warehouse (Brooks PR skort) and Pro Compression. I even threw in my new Champion C9 sunglasses, Gu, and nuun (needed a cherry limeade refill already!) that I picked up today.

runningmailI’ll be giving a better run down of this running gear because it’s going to be part of my race kit for next weekend’s half marathon! I’m getting very excited!

Happy weekend everyone! Now it’s time to relax and rest for tomorrow’s 12 mile LSD run.

How was your Friday? Any big weekend plans?

Just a Few things Friday

5 Apr

Today has truly been a great day. It didn’t start off as anything extraordinary, but it seemed the blessings multiplied as the day went on. My heart is so full of gratitude and all I can really say is: Life is good.

With all this fullness, I’ve only got time for a few things.

One of my first stops today was Trader Joe’s to stock up on my favorite trail mix and a few other goodies. I avoided the craziness by being there bright and early.

Nom nom

Today was the day I finally got my car washed and fully detailed. I’ve only had this gift card since Christmas 2011 (thanks, Mom!) and I figured it was time Coco got a good scrubbin’.

So fresh and so clean, clean

While I was waiting a solid hour and a half for my car, I read most of the May issue of Runner’s World. The article on Kara and Shalane was great, but this tiny little blurb really made my heart swell.

Beautiful.

Upon arriving back home, I had this waiting on my doorstep! If you read yesterday’s post, you all know what song I started singing. The April Stride Box is here!

MAAAAIL!

This little box is chock full of awesomeness, which I will tell you allll about in another post this weekend. Here is a preview:

So many goodies!

On a whim, I popped into a really cute and massive gift store. I came across this sign and it really spoke to me. We live in such a busy world that it can be easy to miss out on so many of life’s simple pleasures. Slow down and let happiness catch you!

This afternoon was sunny and (finally) warm enough to give my new running skirt a spin. I’m thinking I like this whole running skirt thing. I did an easy 2 miles and stretch to loosen up my legs for tomorrow’s Dodge the Deer 5K.

I could get used to this.

This evening, I met a few of my close girlfriends enjoy some dinner and catch up on the latest in each other’s lives. There are so many exciting things going on for everyone, the next year is surely going to be a wonderful one.

Now, I’m resting and trying to decide what to wear for tomorrow’s race! I’m not sure if I want to go with the running skirt or capris. Guess I better make up my mind and get to bed!

Wishing everyone a fantastic weekend! Anyone else racing? Big plans?
