I’m running DC!

On a whim, I joined a group of other women to enter the lottery for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in Washington, D.C. scheduled for April 27, 2014. I didn’t really think about it much after entering the random drawing because I honestly didn’t know what kind of chances we had.

Well…

On Tuesday, my bank account had a charge from Nike (squee!) and later that night, I received an e-mail with these beautiful words:

imageTo say I jumped for joy is an understatement! I bounced around the house in excitement, doing a victory dance (it’s true, just ask my husband).

Two of my favorite things to do are to run and to travel. For a while, I’ve been wanting to do a destination race as a way to combine both of these loves. This will be the perfect opportunity to get a taste of that!

The Nike Women’s Half is also known to be quite an event with a huge expo, limited edition running shoes, motivational training campaigns, and typically little blue Tiffany’s boxes waiting at the finish line*. NWHM also raises millions of dollars for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which is incredible!

All around, I’m really looking forward to participating in April! I’m hoping this will be the spark I needed this season to put energy back into my running routine.

Race recap: Stockadeathon 15K

Today will go down in personal history as the first time I seriously considered skipping a race I had already registered for but ended up running anyway and setting a personal record.

It’s no secret that I was underprepared for the Stockadeathon 15K, considering that I’ve only run a few times in the past few weeks. And I didn’t feel especially great on those runs.

When we finally got out the door this morning and headed to the starting line, my only goal was to finish and hopefully give my running battery the jump start it needed.

When the gun went off, I eased into a pace my body felt comfortable with – 8:00/mile. I just told myself to stick with what felt good and I kept moving. The course was pretty, historical, and peppered with spectators so that helped a lot.

I felt surprisingly good until miles 5-6 where I lost a little momentum in the hilly part. (Turns out the second half of this course is harder than the first.) It took a little while but I got back on pace for the most part and worked my way around Central Park to finally hit the finish line at 1:14:34 (unofficial Garmin time) – a 3 minute PR!

As soon as I finished, the runner’s high kicked in and I was ready to immediately register for 105 more races get back on track.

We headed to the post-race refreshment pavilion and couldn’t believe the amount of goodies! Cider donuts, hot cocoa, chocolate milk, oranges, cookies, candy, juice, soda, water, pizza, bagels, bananas, granola bars and more. There was also a big fireplace. Post-run heaven!

Now, I’m feeling motivated, refreshed and ready to get running again. In the wise words of my brother, you’ll be surprised what you can do after a little time off!

Race Recap: MHR Half Marathon

Between running a half marathon this past Sunday and getting ready to leave for Italy tomorrow, it’s been a whirlwind week! Before heading off, I want to share with you my experience with my second running of the Mohawk Hudson River Half Marathon.

First, it was a beautiful Fall day! The air was crisp in the morning and opened up to a sunny and warm day. This made the colors on the trail along the river absolutely breathtaking to run by. The warmer weather also made it easier to get up early and get to the starting line.

Maybe it was because I was feeling really strong and I had in mind that I was going to surpass my time from last year, but I was giddy with excitement at the start of the race. I really tried to pace myself in the beginning, but we all know it’s hard to pump the brakes when the gun goes off. Mile 1 – 8:20. I found a strong pace of about 8:00/mile and tried to focus on staying there as much as possible.

I was feeling really strong and happy, so it was hard to get myself to pull back and save my energy for the second half of the race. Especially when we hit a big downhill section for miles 4 and 5. I couldn’t put the brakes on in mile 5 and ended up with a 7:41 split. Oops. What can I say? It’s a fast, flat course!

As I went along, I noticed more about the course than I did before and I really enjoyed that. I think that helped me stay strong throughout the majority of the race. Also, smiling as much as possible really kept me in good spirits.

Things didn’t start to get tough until I neared the 10 mile marker. My pace slowed a little to around 8:10. It became a mental game for a while and I repeated to myself a mini-mantra:

“Just keep running. For Aunt Kathy. For Mark. For my mom. For my family. For Boston. For me.”

As I came toward the finish line, I saw my support team by the sideline with these amazing signs that my mom made:

Seeing that display made it impossible not to smile.

I finished the race in 1:46:08, a solid two minutes ahead of my previous time. This PR felt amazing and I left the race satisfied with my effort despite somewhat of a positive split overall. I feel like I earned this fist pump…

Just like last year, the race production seemed flawless to me and everything went smoothly. Baggage check was seamless, the race started on time, there were plenty of volunteers, water stops were fun and fully stocked, and medics were available on bikes. At the finish line, there were free massages, tons of food and goodies, and music. And the finisher medals had an awesome sun catcher effect, which was pretty sweet!

All in all, I had a really great experience. Knowing I have come so far since taking on my first half marathon a year ago is a really incredible feeling and I look forward to seeing how far I can get for the next time.
