Mardi Gras party fun!

17 Feb

Saturday was spent with a couple of my girlfriends baking, cooking, and decorating for our friends’ 2nd Annual Mardi Gras party. They honeymooned in New Orleans and fell in love with the city, food, and atmosphere and now host a party to celebrate that love. Everyone brings a New Orleans inspired dish to share and there’s plenty of beads, feathers, and fun to go around.

We had a great spread of delicious food and desserts. Muffaletta, bourbon chicken, cajun deviled eggs with shrimp, cajun catfish spread, hot crab dip, brie en crute, pepper jelly, bananas foster cupcakes, gumbo, and King cake.

I made the hot crab dip with crispy baguette slices. It was pretty easy to make and it turned out phenomenal. We had to send someone out for another baguette because it went fast!

20130217-202113.jpgOur host made some killer gumbo with shrimp, chicken, and andouille sausage. Authentic and amazing! (I’m really wishing we brought some containers so we could bring some home for leftovers. What were we thinking?!)

I also helped make the bananas foster cupcakes complete with caramelized bananas on top. Homemade King Cake was a highlight of the party – complete with mini baby inside. The person who gets the baby inside their slice of cake is traditionally either King or Queen of the party or hosts the next one. Since our friends do this annually, they gave a prize instead. This year was a nice bottle of tequila.

It was such a fun time and so much good food! I devoured so many delicious things and pretty sure I’m still full.

Anyone else have a Mardi Gras celebration?

Just Because It’s Valentine’s Day!

14 Feb

Happy Valentine’s Day, blogger friends! For those of you that are into that sort of thing, I hope you are having a fabulous day full of love and chocolate. Looks like these runners had a lot of fun at the Cupid’s Undie Run in D.C.:

Would you ever run in your skivvies? I’m not sure I’m brave enough to show that much skin during a race (read: uncensored rapid thigh movement). Honestly, I’d probably wear at least as much clothing as the chick all the way on the left.

Hubby and I are not big on Valentine’s Day, as we prefer to celebrate our love and appreciation for each other at random times throughout the year. We call this “Just Because Day.” There is no limit to how many of these days there are in a year and there is no set date whatsoever. Sometimes Mark will show up with a bouquet of flowers after work or I will leave him a little card on his dresser. Today I found a sweet little card and a bag of strawberry licorice on my pillow. Just Because Day just so happened to fall on Valentine’s Day this time around!

Now I feel like I need to find myself something Red Velvet-y and delicious to truly celebrate…hmm…

Happy Running Loving!

Merry Christmas, You’re Overpronating!

26 Dec

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! If you participated in a Santa Run or any holiday race, I hope you had as much fun as this guy did:

I spent the majority of the weekend cleaning, baking cookies, and wrapping presents. And thenĀ I had a very busy and very enjoyable Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with my husband and family. It seemed like we were non-stop from Friday night through early this morning! It was very exciting to celebrate our first married Christmas.20121226-202611.jpg

Among the generous gifts I received were some of the things on my Running Wish List! I am so excited about the Garmin GPS watch (thank you, hubby!), Saucony Kinvara jacket, Under Armour cold gear tights, Smart Wool running socks, and gift cards to Fleet Feet and Running Warehouse. Mark got a pair of running pants from my parents, too (I wonder how they thought of that?), so I am very excited to try these things out when I can run again!

20121226-200107.jpgWe both took today off to rest and relax (mmm, sleep). The only time I left the house today was to go to my first PT treatment appointment this afternoon. After some stretching, massaging, and time with the E-stim machine and heating pad, I stepped on the digital scanner to check on the pronation of my feet.

20121226-200115.jpgMy feet are on the left, good feet are on the right. Turns out I have moderate pronation. That means my feet are not bearing weight properly, so I am going to be more likely to have repetitive stress injuries. According to the little chart in the PT office, custom orthotic inserts are ridiculously expensive “necessary” to correct the issue and reduce injury. If I don’t go the custom insert route, I can try out some not-so-custom types like Dr. Scholl’s and see how that goes or be really specific about the type of shoe I buy. However, I am told that neither of those options are great long term solutions and if I want to get back to my running routine and the weekly mileage I want to hit, the custom inserts are going to be the best solution. Unless I want to have recurring injuries, of course. I am going to have to think on that (and sell a kidney, maybe?). On the bright side, after a couple of PT treatments we are going to try out a little running. I CAN’T WAIT!
