Running free on Friday

If you’re like me, you have a theme song for pretty much everything. Today, I give you my theme for Fridays. This starts to play in my head Thursday night because I currently do not work on Fridays. It is my day to do what I want!

I started the day with a gorgeous naked run. That’s right, friends. I ran without any tracking device! No Garmin, no iPhone app, not even music. It was just me and my shoes hitting the pavement with the sun shining and the birds chirping.

If I recall correctly from other times I’ve run this route, it was just under 4 miles. It felt freeing to be disconnected from gadgets and just run.

I ran a bunch of errands today (you know, the usual – Target, Trader Joe’s, Fleet Feet) and was very happy to discover more running mail! I did a little dance.

My order came in from Under Armour and I got a new issue of Runner’s World! I added these to my other packages that arrived this week from Running Warehouse¬†(Brooks PR skort) and Pro Compression. I even threw in my new Champion C9 sunglasses, Gu, and nuun¬†(needed a cherry limeade refill already!)¬†that I picked up today.

runningmailI’ll be giving a better run down of this running gear because it’s going to be part of my race kit for next weekend’s half marathon! I’m getting very excited!

Happy weekend everyone! Now it’s time to relax and rest for tomorrow’s 12 mile LSD run.

Races and gear and food, oh my!

I feel like there are lots of exciting things going on right now!

As soon as I woke up, I registered to run the Mohawk Hudson River Half Marathon¬†in October! This was my first half this past Fall and I’m excited to run it again. Of course, I’d like to see if I can beat my previous time of 1:48 but I think my main goal will be to smile for photos. I’m also very excited because more people I know will be running as well, so I’m looking forward to group training runs, taking fun photos, and collapsing¬†partying together after we all finish.

Mark and I will be joining in the fun of the Color Me Rad 5K again, but this year we are heading to the NYC race because my brother-in-law Bill recently moved down there. We are so looking forward to getting splashed with color and dancing our way to the finish line!!!!

COLORMERADFun fact: We went to a diner for lunch before washing ourselves off and the only comment we received was to my husband, “WOW! You’re so tall!” Really? That’s it?

After registering for races, I went for a run to officially start my day. I took it relatively easy because I will be running again at MIDNIGHT for a group fun run (aka “frun”) with a regional running group that I am a member of. This will actually be my first time participating in a group event with them, so I’m very excited. I’m hoping to gain a bunch of running BFFs.

Today’s run:

3.12 miles | 29:21 total time | 9:24 avg pace

I also did an 8:00 minute core workout. The timer definitely said 10:00 minutes though, so I think it tricked me into doing abs for longer than I signed up for. Still haven’t mastered the side plank with leg raises, but I’m getting stronger!

This afternoon, I met up with my very best friend Vicki for some lunch and girl talk. We ate at Comfort Kitchen, which has a menu full of American comfort foods like mac and cheese, creamy soups, burgers, meatloaf, pasta, grilled sandwiches, hearty salads, and baked goods. They also have beer and wine. And they use mainly locally sourced ingredients and products, which is awesome.


I had the butternut squash mac and cheese with a side of triple chocolate cookie. This mac and cheese just won best dish at the Mac and Cheese Bowl! Who knew such an event took place? I’d like to know when it happens again so I can be there with my taste testing spoon.

Remember when I said I wanted to buy that amphipod reflector band¬†last week? Well, since I’m running a group frun at midnight tonight, I wanted to be super prepared and visible. I headed to Fleet Feet after lunch and bought that sucker! And with that purchase I reached my member spending goal and earned a $25 credit for my next purchase. Score!

This is going to be an activity packed weekend – fruns, a charity gala, farmer’s market, anniversary trip planning, and The Walking Dead. Happy Weekend everyone!

Re-stocking, Sunday stuff, and core training

Today I did something I never imagined I’d do. I signed up for a Twitter account. Yes, that’s right, you’re looking at the newest addition to the Twitterverse! I’m still working on figuring it out, but you can follow me @runbreathebe¬†if you’d like. Or if you have any tweeting tips to send my way, don’t hesitate. I’m really not good at this game.

Yesterday I took a trip to Fleet Feet to replenish my nuun and Gu supply. I also saw at least 12 new items for my running wish list. There are so many awesome new tops, capris, and gadgets for Spring. One of the things I added to my list that is actually in my price range is this really cool reflective and blinking band by amphipod for running in the dark. I’ve actually thought about attaching a Knuckle Light to my ankle for added visibility, but with these I wouldn’t have to! On the next trip, it will be mine.


They of course did not have my favorite mint chocolate Gu flavor or pink lemonade nuun, so I grabbed a few different flavors to try. Peanut butter, jet blackberry, chocolate outrage, and vanilla bean. I tried the fruit punch nuun today and it’s no pink lemonade, but it’s pretty good. I also decided it was finally time to purchase that 13.1 car magnet now that it’s been over 5 months since my first half.

20130224-164423.jpgAfter restocking my mini-fuel and hydration collection, it was off to Trader Joe’s for some tasty groceries. TJ’s on a Saturday afternoon is as great of an idea as a root canal, but it was either that or go without my favorite trail mix all week. That was not about to happen.

Mark and I did round 2 of grocery shopping today and I found my second Designer Whey item! The chocolate caramel crunch protein bar. There are a couple more places listed online that sell their products locally, so I might have to stop at ALL of them to find out what’s available.


Today I also joined the Under Armour What’s Beautiful¬†challenge with a goal of “Building a stronger core to be a stronger runner.” The website is giving me a little trouble, but once it’s all set I’ll share the link to my profile and start logging my progress. Anyone else doing it? (Tina and Jenny?)

This afternoon I did an easy recovery run of 1.5 miles just to loosen my legs up, followed by some stretching and an 8:00 min Easy Abs circuit using my lolo app. Adding that 3 minutes really changes things. This move was a killer and truth be T, I couldn’t do it. I had to skip the leg extension part. I guess mastering this move is just going to be part of my goal!

Core and strength training were things I neglected while training for my first half marathon and I don’t want to continue to make that mistake. There are tons of articles and pro-tips that emphasize the importance of building a strong core to improve running performance. Top 10 reasons can be found here.

I can already see some positive changes in my body since my return to running in early January, especially since I’ve added strength training circuits. I’m feeling stronger and looking forward to seeing my body take a better shape and becoming a better runner for it.
