Turkey Trot (or Not)

26 Nov

I hope all the Turkey Trotters out there who ran on Thursday had great races and a wonderful holiday!

I was not able to join in the local Turkey Trot this year and I was a little saddened by this. On the bright side, Mark (the Husband) and I were able to take the opportunity to visit his brother in Queens, NY for a few days.

On Thanksgiving morning, we moseyed down to Herald Square to catch the tail end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. (Seriously, we showed up at 11:45 am.)

After the brief parade viewing (and dodging the crowd dispersal), we took a walk to Central Park. It was a beautiful Autumn day, perfect for walking!

For dinner, we ate a delicious meal at Brick Cafe. They had a special Thanksgiving menu with traditional turkey dinners as well as fun seasonal dishes. The turkey was moist and savory, the candied sweet potatoes were to die for, and the pumpkin gnocchi was perfectly complemented by the mushroom creme sauce. There were also leek mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and spinach. This was hands down the most delicious (and non-tradish) Thanksgiving meal I’ve ever had! Shhh, don’t tell….

Wish I had a better food shot!

We packed a LOT of things into two and a half days, including seeing other good hometown friends who also live in Queens now, doing a little sight-seeing, meeting up with two couples we met on our honeymoon (who are from LA and the Jersey Shore), and even more good food at an Indian restaurant. If we had more time, we would have liked to volunteer for the Hurricane Sandy effort, but we were not able to. Instead, I will be sending some needed items back down for donations.

My foot was a bit sore after all of the walking and rushing around, so I did not attempt any kind of running after getting back into town. Instead, I iced and found myself sucked into a Downton Abbey marathon…(note: I’m kind of nerdy).

This is a pretty accurate depiction of how the rest of the weekend went:
