Monday Meditation: Simple Pleasures

12 Nov

I have to admit, today was so busy I almost forgot it was Monday! I stumbled across this quote late tonight and thought it would be the perfect meditation for what turned out to be a beautiful, warm, sunny Fall day.

“One of life’s simplest pleasures is going for a run outside. The late Dr. George Sheehan summed it up best: ‘Out on the roads there is fitness and self-discovery and the persons we were destined to be.’ So once in a while let’s forget about footwear, performance standards, and high-tech gadgetry — and instead simply let your body and imagination take you to new and familiar places. Armed with a sense of play as you run, there is no better purpose or outcome other than to escape and be in the moment.”

-Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, Natural Running Center

I would have LOVED to run outside today and take advantage of the unseasonably gorgeous weather and get lost in a run. I can almost feel the pavement beneath my feet, the quickening of my heart and breath, and the Autumn air filling my senses just thinking about it!

We can become so preoccupied with GPS watches, pace calculators, the right music, and hitting targeted paces that we forget the most important thing about running – the simple pleasure of moving our bodies in this particular way, taking in the world around us, and allowing our true selves to unfold as we go.
